The basics are just to think logicly and the pen tool is prob. the best tool to get smooth nice cuts. But when used wrong like int his video you only get hard cuts. Try learning the pen tool better like when used in Illustrator. Make curves and smooth shapes. But for sure - this is how I alot of the times mask out an object. Good starter!

No offense GrahamPhisher but this is a terrible way of creating a render. It will leave you with a million jagged edges and will be impossible to work with hair. I personally prefer the extraction method (press alt+Ctrl+x). Even the magnetic lasso tool will do a much better job than this.

I WOULD HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH EVERYONE ON WHATS THE RIGHT WAY TO CUT OUT... Using the PEN Tool is Not and Using the Lasso Tool is not... ACUTALLY MAKING THE OBJECT is the Correct way to get exact pixel by pixel cut. I find PEN TOOL is Nice gives u a smooth cut, but people aint smooth.. Lasso tool is good if u know how to use it properlly. After u use either tool.. make sure to mask it and get in there pixel by pixel to add or take away.! - THE HITMAYNE
